     Transportation

You can get to Abkhazia by train, car or airplane through Sochi and then Adler. The road from Adler to the border between Russia and Abkhazia takes only 20 minutes (without accounting for traffic, which has become heavier in Sochi and Adler in recent years). To get to the border you can take a bus, mini-bus or taxi.

The border checkpoint on the Psou River segment of the Russian-Abkhaz border is open around the clock. There is a technical break between 1am and 3am and shift changes from 7:45am to 8:15am and from 7:45am to 8:15pm. In addition, on Tuesday mornings the border checkpoint is closed from 7:30am to noon. At the height of the tourist season there are lines at the border. In order to avoid the lines it is best to arrive at the border in the early morning or late evening.

From the border there are buses, mini-buses and taxis available to all Abkhaz cities. The trip along the well-paved road takes 20 minutes to Gagra, 40 minutes to Pitsunda, an hour to New Athos, an hour and a half to Sukhum, two and a half hours to Ochamchyra, three hours to Tkuarchal and four hours to Gal.

The price of the trip depends on the distance. A mini-bus ride to the Sukhum train station costs 150 rubles.

Within Abkhazia buses and minibuses run between all cities. In addition, there is an extensive network of private taxis. A number of taxi services operate in every city and taxis are available at any time of day to take you to any destination. It is best to discuss the cost of the ride with the taxi service operator. An average taxi trip within Sukhum costs 100-150 rubles.
