Dzou PlaceExtreme walking route to Dzou Place, including a visit to the Dzou alpine lake via Arabika Mountain and a hike to Mamdzyshkha Mountain. The trip can take anywhere from 3 days for a group of experienced hikers to 5 days for regular travelers, or groups including women and children. The total length of the route is 30 kilometers.
The walking route begins at Gega Waterfall. The trail follows the Gega River gorge and then rises up for 1.5 kilometers and moves off to the left. A steep climb begins that takes 6 to 7 hours. By the evening of the first day the group gets to Dzou Place. The first night can be spent in tents near the shepherds' huts. On the morning of the second day, a new ascent begins along the rocky ridges. In two hours the hikers will get to the beautiful alpine Dzou Lake, where they can take a break, rest and have some food. The trail continues from the lake along the Dzou gorge for three hours, rises up the Adbaa Ridge and then descends to the foot of the Arabika Mountain, where tents can be set up for the second night. Travelers must make sure to get water at Dzou Lake, because there will be no sources of water on the path from the lake to Khyrky Mountain (the locals call it Umbrella Mountain). A kaleidoscope of beautiful mountain views will accompany your walk. Depending on the time of year, you may also find some patches of snow. The group will go around the Gagra Ridge and get to some shepherds' huts in the alpine meadows. The third day will begin at a fork in the trail. If you go southeast, you can walk down to the Tsandrypsh settlement. If you continue southwest, you will get to the Arabika Mountain ridge and cross over to the gently sloping Khyrky Mountain. From there you will see the road that can take you to Mamdzyshkha Mountain. You can go up to the top of the mountain, or take the road straight to the main road. There is an observation platform at the top of the Mamdzyshkha, and from that vantage point you can see "half of Abkhazia." As you look around, each view is more beautiful than the last - the sea, Pistunda Cape, Gudauta, the snowy peaks of Bzyb Ridge, etc. |
