Climate Abkhazia has an exceptional variety of weather conditions. Within the 50-kilometer stretch between the Black Sea coast and the Greater Caucasus Range you can go from humid subtropical areas to permanent snow and glaciers. However, the overall climate, determined by the proximity of the sea and the mountains, is humid and subtropical. Winter in Abkhazia begins in mid-December and spring arrives by early March. Even in the winter the temperature rarely drops below 0 degrees Celsius and freezing temperatures are only seen high in the mountains. The average winter temperatures are 7-9 degrees Celsius in the daytime and 2-4 degrees Celsius at night. The average summer temperature is 26-28 degrees Celsius in the daytime and 19-21 degrees Celsius at night. The annual average temperature is 15 degrees Celsius. Average annual precipitation in Abkhazia ranges from 1300 mm in the coastal region and up to 3500 mm in the mountains. The majority of precipitation comes in the fall and winter. In the high mountain regions lengthy rainstorms are common in the summer and early fall. The temperature of the sea reaches 27 degrees Celsius in the summer and the water stays at 18-19 degrees Celsius all the way until October, so the beach season lasts from mid-May to October. The physical and chemical makeup of the coastal water in Abkhazia is close to mineral water levels, and salinity is only 18 grams per liter, half that of the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas. |
